The client is just one piece of the equation and not the most important because like you pointed out we had repo in Linux for more than a decade! The other piece is games sales numbers on Linux are clearer now than they use to be just a few years ago. in the past few years the many Humble Indie Bundle demonstrated that the market exist and it turn out way bigger than expected. The last piece and most important in my view is that Valve is rumoured to be getting into the console market and they sure as hell won't be able to license a Windows or Apple product to be the OS of a SteamBox.
