Erratum: Apparently you can pause the game but only by sitting at the bonfire. Also another aspect of my review is wrong but this one I rather not divulge for fear wasting the surprise. "Spoilers!"
Comparing Dark Souls and Demon's Souls is not an easy task. It not a sequel, prequel or even a remake. A reinterpretation of the same concept would be a more accurate way to describe the relationship between the two game. Some peoples have used spiritual successor but I feel both game are too much alike for that label to fit. You played Demon Souls you will feel right at home in Dark Souls almost the same weapons, moves and strategy hell even some boss managed to return. In an updated fashion!
The game is a continuous giant dungeons similar to old school roguelike action RPG and the Diablo franchise with the caveat that most action RPG will feel like a cake walk compare to Dark Souls. From Software with both Demon Souls and Dark Souls are I believe creating a new genre of RPG. For a lack of a better term I call it the Pure Hardcore Action RPG. Because it hard, unforgiving and devoid of crap quest like fetch this and fetch that am looking at you Elder Scrolls! And it fun provided you're a bit of a masochist but what gamer ain't anyway.
You can't pause the game I mean it no pause at all going into the items menu will not stop the game do that at the wrong time too bad you die. And dying you will do a lot at least until your build is powerful enough and you learned a few harsh lessons like keeping your shield up when exploring a new area. Running away from an enemy too powerful for you wont save you most of them will follow you almost everywhere and they will catch up! Pick your fight and pick your ground like I said they follow you everywhere so use that to bait/pull enemy to more favourable ground.
Merchants will sell you some useful items and blacksmith will repair your stuff once you find them because the dev have made a point of hiding most of them in the craziest place. I say sell because they wont buy anything from you so you have to souls farm for everything you want to buy or repair on top of farming to level up.
Dark Souls is by far the biggest challenge you can find in gaming these days and for 360 owners that a chance to see why PS3 owners were so excited about Demon Souls.
